Meldon Reservoir, Nr. Okehampton, Devon

Terry's picture

Although this is a man-made reservoir, apart from the dam at the north-eastern end, this location has much more the appearance of a natural lake. There is a very good footpath/trail running right round the lake and a reasonably fit walker could complete a circumnavigation in around two hours, however stops for taking photos will add considerably to the time ;-)

On reaching the south-western tip, it's worth exploring a way up the West Okement River, which feeds the reservoir and has several small cascades.

The whole area around the lake is excellent for scenic landscapes, wildlife and birds. In mid-winter, the sun sets down the length of the lake from the dam; so it's worth aiming to be on the dam around that time of day.
