Glenfinnan Viaduct, Fort William, Scotland

sharpeimages's picture

Located at the top of Loch Shiel in the West Highlands of Scotland, from the vantage point above the Scottish National Trust visitor centre you can gain excellent views of both the Glenfinnan Viaduct and by simply by turning through 180° the Glenfinnan Monument standing proud in front of Lochaber’s Loch Shiel, also a spectacular view.

Glenfinnan Viaduct is on the line of the Mallaig extension of the West Highland Railway. The line is used by passenger trains operated by ScotRail between Glasgow Queen Street and Mallaig, usually diesel multiple units. However in the summer the heritage Jacobite steam train operates along the line, so make sure you check the timetables before visiting.

Spanning 380m, formed from 21 arches and built on a 12 chain radius curve the viaduct is a very photogenic subject. The viaduct has played a starring role in many films and has featured in three Harry Potter movies.
